Franchising offers companies opportunities to go international with minimal managerial resource on the back on a third party's capital and local market knowledge. The United Nations WIPO recognises franchising's ability to ensure that "a large and stable organisation is able to grow and develop, motivated by or indeed driven by, the spirit of small business".

The International Chamber of Commerce acknowledges franchising as " an extremely successful vehicle for the distribution of products and services".

UNIDROIT sees that franchising is " playing an ever greater role in a wide range of national economies".

The European Union Commission states that franchising " facilitates cross border development, has a positive effect on competition and stimulates economic activity"

Franchising accounted for over US$868billion worth of sales in the USA and US$300billion in the EU during 2010.

Dr Mark Abell is acknowledged world wide as one of the leading experts on international franchising. Having written his doctoral thesis on "The Law and Regulation of Franchising in the EU", Mark has acted as an expert to the WIPO and WTO on franchising and is co-editor of the world's leading legal periodical in his field of practice, "The International Journal of Franchising Law".

Mark is a member of the IBA Franchise Committee and the ABA Franchise Forum. He is a frequent speaker at both legal and commercial conferences around the world on Franchising and Multi-Channel Strategies.

Lee Lin Li is an expert on franchising and a partner in Tay & Partners, She has wide experience of franchising and has written the chapter on "Franchising in Malaysia" in The Franchise Law Review.

Justi Kusumah is a partner in the Jakarta based law firm K&K and has many years experience of advising foreign companies investing in the Indonesian market.

 

 

This seminar will examine how Malaysian companies can use franchising both to enter key foreign markets , such as China and Indonesia, and benefit from new businesses entering the Malaysian market. The seminar will outline the various ways in which franchising can be used as part of an international growth strategy and focus upon the regulatory issues that are encountered on entering both the Chinese and Indonesian markets in particular. It will also explain the challenges that face Malaysian companies bringing foreign franchise concepts into Malaysia.
